How to Clean a Filthy and Abused Toilet the Green Way

If you're ever faced with having to clean a stained and filthy toilet that's been left unattended for a long time, it could be a nightmare. Instead of paying big bucks to replace it, try the simple steps below first. You might be surprised at how easy the stains and dirt will melt away with very little elbow grease involved.

First you're going to want to put on gloves so you won't be touching any of the dirt. Toilets carry germs so this will protect you from getting any on your skin.

Turn off the water going into the toilet after you flush. You want to have the toilet as empty as possible. This will help the products being used work better. The knob to turn off the water is located at the bottom of the toilet. Just turn it and the water should go off.

Pour a medium bottle of cheap white vinegar into the bowl and let it sit for about an hour. The vinegar will break down any calcium deposits that have built up inside of it. They will loosen and you will be able to remove them.

Make a very thick paste of the Borax by mixing a small amount of water with it. Plaster this mixture all around the inside of the bowl making sure to cover all the stains and grime. Let sit at least an hour along with the vinegar.

Once the mixture has set for the desired amount of time, you'll want to remove any buildup that has loosened up. Most of it should now be floating in the bottom of the bowl. Scoop this out before turning on the water and flushing.

Now you can begin wiping the Borax paste from the inside of the bowl. The dirt and grime should easily wipe away. This will also kill most of the bad smell that is probably coming from inside the bowl.

Finish by scrubbing the toilet as you usually do. You should notice that most of the dirt has been taken care of by the vinegar and Borax, and your job is much easier. This process may just save you from having to purchase a new one.
